The San Marino Unified School District's mission and goal is to communicate up-to-date, clear and concise information to our parents and to our community about our Budget. We are closely monitoring the State's deteriorating fiscal condition and its impact on K-12 Education funding. The State has reduced K-12 Education funding by $20 billion since January 2008. Since passage of our Measure E parcel tax initiative on May 5, 2009, the State has cut K-12 education funding three (3) more times, which represented an approximate cut of $1.8 million. We experienced a total of five (5) cuts to our District's budget during the 2008-09 school year. Additionally the State has deferred nearly $8.4 billion of Education funding from the current fiscal year, 2009-10, to next fiscal year, 2010-11. This equates to $1,400 per student or $4.4 million for SMUSD that will not be received until August 2010.
The District has been extremely proactive in analyzing and projecting the loss of State revenues and we are carefully monitoring student enrollment, our cash balances and the State's fiscal situation. The Board of Education recently established a cash flow fund to ensure that the District can meet its monthly expenditure obligations.
We encourage you to read some of the District Briefings and the Budget Presentations to learn more about our current budget crisis, what we have already done to bridge the gap in State funding over the last two years, and our next steps in addressing the District's current deficit.
